Warp, weft, bias grains for beginners… and why garments twist!

Have you ever had a garment where the side-seams twist after washing a couple of times?

Here’s an explanation: grain line!
This video explores the topic, demonstrates the directions on my vintage childhood Spear’s heddle weaving loom, and shows how to distinguish between warp and weft on fabric that’s already been cut.

Next, to seam the sides and button up the shoulders and neck. It will keep me warm while I knit those much anticipated sleeves.

Decided to stitch my 1890s hems using thread from Decided to stitch my 1890s hems using thread from the linen-wool blend fabric.
I used long offcuts to carefully remove some threads in both direction, and then did a burn test to differentiate which was which!!
The linen was stronger than the wool, so it got a good waxing and was then put to use.
